ONTARIO, OR (KPTV) -

An Oregon Department of Corrections inmate died unexpectedly Saturday at the Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., Sou Seng Saepharn, 42, was being evaluated by institution medical staff after complaints of not feeling well.

During evaluation and preparation to be taken to the hospital, Saepharn's condition worsened and CPR was initiated, according to the Oregon Department of Corrections, but life-saving measures were not successful.

According to the Oregon Department of Corrections, as with all unanticipated deaths in state prisons, the Oregon State Police Criminal Investigations Unit is conducting an investigation.

Saepharn had been in custody since April 2009. His earliest release date was January 2026, according to the Oregon Department of Corrections.
