SELLWOOD, OR (KPTV) -

The new Sellwood Bridge opened ahead of schedule Monday night.

The bridge opened to traffic at 8 p.m. which was ten hours ahead of schedule.

This is a big milestone in the project but there is still work scheduled through November to finish the new bridge.

Multnomah County officials said several small and large projects still need to be done.

According to the Sellwood Bridge website, work crews still need to remove the old detour bridge truss, which includes the deck, sidewalks, and railing of the old bridge.

Other small pieces of the old bridge will be removed gradually over the next several months.

Multnomah County also said crews will be adding a public art installation on the north and south sides of Tacoma Street. The exhibition will feature 23 sculptures.

The old Sellwood Bridge closed on Feb. 25. It's been up since 1925, and the narrow, crumbling structure had well-known foundation problems and would likely not stand up to an earthquake.

Although the new bridge is open to traffic, Multnomah County said drivers should expect delays within the next several months as crews worth through ongoing projects.
