PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Strong winds brought down trees and power lines Tuesday, knocking out power for thousands of people in Oregon and southwestern Washington.

By late Tuesday afternoon, Portland General Electric said more than 7,000 people had lost power in Clackamas, Marion, Multnomah and Washington counties. PGE listed the cause of the outages as being under investigation.

Wind gusts of 40-50 mph were recorded around the metro area Tuesday afternoon. A 49 mph wind gust recorded at Portland International Airport was the strongest since late December.

Cowlitz PUD reported at noon it was experiencing a widespread outage with approximately 10,000 customers without power in Cowlitz County. According to the utility's website, the outages were mostly in the Castle Rock and Silver Lake areas.

The utility said it had crews working to restore service as quickly as possible.

Pacific Power reported on its website that about 7,700 customers were without power in Albany as of 1 p.m. The utility didn't list a cause for the outage, but expected power to be restored by 4 p.m.

Windy conditions were expected in much of the region Tuesday, with a wind advisory from the National Weather Service in effect from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. for the Willamette Valley and southwestern Washington.

Along the Oregon and Washington coasts and Coast Range mountains, NWS issued a high wind warning, with gusts up to 65 mph expected.
