VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Vancouver Police Department gave out 35 department awards Tuesday night.

Several went to Sgt. Jack Anderson whose K9 partner died in the line of duty in September.

K9 Ike was a 6-year-old Belgian Malinois, stabbed during a call and died after surgery.

Anderson was awarded with special awards in the K9 division.

James McElvain, Chief of Vancouver Police said the loss of K9 Ike was tragic for Anderson, his family including the police department.

“On one hand they’re a tool, on the other hand they’re a member of our law enforcement family.”

McElvain said in the case of losing Ike, it’s really one of those moments you don’t want to go through.

“Anytime any member of our family gets hurt were going to be heartbroken about that.”

The award was held at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Washington and held annually.
