Human waste being left in parking lots, sidewalks near SE Portland businesses

Businesses in Southeast Portland and their employees are dealing with what’s becoming a stinky and unsightly situation: Human waste is being left in parking lots, alleys, and on sidewalks.

Vanessa Wright works near the entrance to Springwater Trail in inner southeast Portland’s industrial area. Wednesday morning, she discovered a large pool of human waste while she was parking her car.

“I was gagging. It was going to be topped with vomit. It was so bad, I had to breathe out,” said Wright.

Businesses nearby confirm the waste is a growing problem, likely tied to the area’s growing homeless population. Many are sympathetic to the plight of the homeless, but there’s a question of what to do with the waste.

“I don’t want to touch that,” said Wright. “I don’t want to pick it up. It’s dangerous, you know? Somebody should come clean this up.”

Linc Mann, a spokesman with the City of Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services said the city has been made aware of the problem, and a crew with the sewer maintenance department will be dispatched to clean it up.

Mann confirmed there has been an increase in complaints in the area about illegal dumping and waste materials.
