PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Protesters gathered in Pioneer Courthouse Square Thursday, demanding clean air and stricter laws in the wake of the recent pollution scandal.

Many of the people who showed up live near factories on the east side where the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has detected dangerous levels of toxic metals.

A few dozen people met at the protest at noon, holding signs about air quality and calling out the companies experts say produced the pollution.

The protesters also brought several boxes of vegetables grown in their gardens that the Oregon Health Authority recommended they no longer eat.

In zones near Bullseye Glass Co. and Uroboros Glass, OHA officials have told people not to eat food grown in the soil there.

Protesters shared their thoughts on the possibly toxic produce by sharing a menu including “hexavalent hash browns” and “arsenic asparagus.”

They say they want officials to shut down the glass companies using the harmful chemicals, and they want DEQ to be regulated by the legislature.

“We want to have healthy families and that’s becoming impossible with what DEQ is allowing companies like Bullseye, Uroboros and Precision to do,” Brady Bennon, who lives in southeast Portland, said. “They’re just releasing lots of toxic metals into our air stream and that’s a danger to our families.”

Earlier this week, the director of the DEQ resigned amid the criticism surrounding these new pollution concerns, citing health issues.
