PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Efforts to bridge the divide between law enforcement and the community brought the nation's top cop to Portland Thursday.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch focused on how Portland is part of the solution while speaking to city leaders.

Lynch met Portland mayor Charlie Hales and other local leaders in a roundtable discussion at the Blazers Boys and Girls Club.

She is on a national tour, following up on a presidential task force aimed at building trust with police.

Lynch said she chose to visit Portland because of work the city has done with the Department of Justice over the past four years, work that is part of a settlement involving excessive force being used with the mentally ill.

“There's some very good work being done here that we think can be useful for other communities struggling with this difficult issue to learn about, in particular, how does law enforcement engage with individuals in the mentally ill community,” she said.

Earlier in the day Lynch met with sixth graders at George Middle School.

They're part of a gang and violence prevention program that promotes positive relationships with police

Lynch also spoke about Portland’s shortage of police officers, saying the Department of Justice hopes increasing respect between the community and police will also help increase officer recruitment.
