MONMOUTH, OR (KPTV) -

A driver veered off Highway 223, slammed into trees and was rescued from the fiery crash by deputies who just happened to be in the area moments before his car exploded.

The dramatic scene was captured by the patrol car's dashboard camera.

Deputy Eric Larson and support services specialist Shelby Baker were traveling to Western Oregon University in Monmouth to represent the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office at a career fair.

At 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, about 10 miles away from Monmouth on Highway 223 near McTimmonds Road, they spotted an oncoming car leave the shoulder of the roadway and crash into trees

The car immediately began smoking. Larson was joined by Polk County reserve deputy Eric Berry, who was also passing through the area, in trying to get the driver out of the car.

Damage and debris from the crash prevented quick access to the driver. After a few minutes, the deputies managed to force the door open and pull out the driver, who was the only person in the car.

Immediately after the deputies got the driver out, the cabin of the car became engulfed in flames. Two minutes later, there was an explosion inside the car.

The driver escaped with only an injury to his leg.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office is investigating what led to the crash.
