CLARK COUNTY, WA (KPTV) -

Burglars are targeting boats moored along the Columbia River, leading boat owners and the Port of Camas-Washougal to tighten security.

There are now security cameras at each of the marina gates showing who is coming in and out. Going through the gates requires a key, so boat owners think the burglars are coming off the river.

Ernie Stille installed an alarm among other security measures after burglars hit his boat for the second time.

On the last weekend of January, they stole a barbecue, filet knives and the solar powered security light he planned to install to deter burglaries. He said his neighbors at the marina were also hit last month.

This summer, Stille said someone stole $2,600 worth of fishing gear from his boat, including lures he inherited from his late father.

He installed his own security camera, but also started attended port commission meetings to request additional security at the marina, saying the burglaries make him feel violated.

“A lot of our stuff is very personal items, a certain fishing pole you've always caught fish on or whatever,” Stille explained. “Yeah. It's not a fun deal when people take that stuff you work so hard to get yourself.”

Port officials noted they are working to get WiFi for the slips so boat owners can put up web cameras for security. They also hope to buy additional security cameras in the next fiscal year.
