ST. HELENS, OR (KPTV) -

A war memorial was snatched from a St. Helens park, and police say it won't be returned just yet.

A World War Two cannon has sat in McCormick Park for 59 years. In February, it was stolen.

Police say they immediately suspected Charles Hegele, 67, a well-known collector of military items.

Hegele was arrested on Wednesday but has posted bond.

The cannon has been tracked down but police say it won't be returned to the park yet. They say Hegele tried to return the cannon to firing condition.

It will now have to meet the current standards for decommissioning. It is currently impounded at the St. Helens Police Department and cannot be put on display at this time.
