SILVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

The town of Silverton is dealing with the loss of a beloved teacher and a student after both were killed in a car crash over the weekend.

According to police, Doug Bonham was driving with 16-year-old Matthew Albrecht in the passenger seat when both were killed after the car they were in crashed on South Palmer Road near Molalla.

An elementary teacher at Bethany Charter School in Silverton, Bonham’s brother-in-law said Doug had been mentoring Silverton High junior Albrecht for the last several years, and the two had just finished playing basketball.

Bonham was on his way to drop Albrecht off at his house when the crash happened.

Outside Silverton High School a colorful bench greeted students as they were reminded of a life cut too short.

Teachers like Heather Bashor who had Albrecht in class say the junior was very energetic in and out of class.

“When he went to games, if he was in the crowd, he just brought a spirit about him that energized everybody, he was the lighthearted yet passionate and competitive about everything he did,” she remembered. “He just made the mood lighthearted, and that made everyone feel welcome.”

Students at Silverton High School wore green and blue, the color of Matthew’s favorite football team, the Seattle Seahawks.

A vigil is scheduled for Monday night for Albrecht and Bonham.
