PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

TrackTown USA is up and running in Portland. This weekend athletes from over 170 countries will be competing at the new stadium located at the Oregon Convention Center.

The USATF Indoor Championships will be held, March 11-12, and the IAAF World Indoor Championships, March 17-20.

TrackTown USA President and U.S. Olympics men's track and field coach Vin Lananna says not only is this exciting for the athletes but the track itself is the first of its kind in the United States.

As for the stadium, Lananna says you can't get a bad seat in the house.

"I think the only thing I would pay attention to is if you are sitting in row one and you're watching the 400 meters or the 4x4, you may get a few beads of sweat on you from the athletes."

The new indoor track will be surrounded by a temporary 7,000-seat stadium for both meets.

Lananna said Portland is the first stop on the road to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Athletes looking to get on an Olympic team will be competing in Portland at the two events. The top two finishers in each event at the USATF Indoor Championships will represent Team USA at the IAAF World Indoor Championships.

This is the first time in 30 years that the IAAF World Indoor Championships have been held in the U.S.
