SCAPPOOSE, OR (KPTV) -

A man rescued his unconscious neighbor from her burning home in Scappoose on Tuesday morning.

Firefighters responded to Willamette Court near Heron Meadows Drive at 7 a.m. and found smoke and flames coming from a single-wide mobile home.

A woman was then located in a nearby grassy field with police officers providing medical aid to her.

David Hobizal told investigators he heard popping noises outside his home and thought it was duck hunters in a nearby dike area.

He then heard glass breaking and looked out his window to see a home across the street on fire.

His wife called 911 while he went to the burning home. The front door was locked, so he went to the back and found a door that was cracked open.

Hobizal found a woman unconscious behind the door. He pulled her out, with her dog never leaving her side, according to firefighters.

The woman was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital. She was listed in serious condition Tuesday afternoon.

"David's quick, selfless actions towards helping out his neighbor are the reason this resident gets a second chance," according to a Scappoose Fire District statement.

Crews fought the fire for 40 minutes before bringing it under control.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
