PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man accused of shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend in southwest Portland was back in a Washington County courtroom on Tuesday, as some of the victim's family members gave testimony.

Daniel Wyant is charged with killing Monica Van Laer at their apartment right in front of family and friends. Some of them spoke about that day in court.

"It was a long time. We were sitting on him and holding him down, and we heard sirens," Van Laer's stepfather described in court how he and another family member were able to hold Wyant down after the shooting.

The shooting happened in November 2014 at the Broadmoor Manor apartments in Raleigh Hills, where Wyant and Van Laer once lived together.

Investigators say several people were inside the apartment helping Van Laer move out, including her mom, stepdad and sister. While they were packing things up, investigators say Wyant opened fire and shot Van Laer multiple times, then shot himself in the head.

Wyant was arrested after recovering from his wounds.

The trial began on Monday.

In court, Van Laer's sister recalled the chaos of that day.

"I saw the gun first coming around the corner, and I saw Daniel and he was just shooting her and she just fell," said Van Laer's sister.

Wyant is charged with murder. He has previously pleaded not guilty.

Wyant plans to take the stand in his own defense. That will happen next week.
