PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The National Weather Service issued a hurricane-force wind warning for coastal waters off Oregon and Washington Wednesday.

The storm system will bring strong winds from the southwest beginning Wednesday afternoon and continuing into the early morning hours of Thursday morning.

NWS expects sustained winds between 40 and 60 mph over the ocean, with gusts as high as 85 mph possible. Forecasters also warned of extremely dangerous seas, with swells between 25 and 30 feet.

The hurricane-force wind warning is in effect from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m.

The strongest winds will remain offshore, but communities along the coast can also expect potentially damaging winds throughout the afternoon and evening hours.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning starting at 1 p.m. for the coast, with winds expected to be in the 35 to 45 mph range and gusts around 75 mph possible.

In the Willamette Valley and Portland metro area, conditions are expected to be calmer but still gusty. A wind advisory is in effect starting at 4 p.m., with winds expected to be around 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph.
