PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

There are 300 proposed stations for Portland's new bicycle-sharing program, and the public is being asked to help narrow it down to 100.

Biketown is scheduled to launch in July 2016 with 1,000 bikes available to ride from one point to another around town for a small fee.

A new website launched Wednesday with a map of 300 proposed locations around the city. People can leave feedback on each location, which will be used by the Portland Bureau of Transportation and Motivate to select the final 100 station locations.

The stations will be the primary places where people can rent and return the bikes.

An analysis of residential density, employment density, transit demand, recreation demand and major city attractions was used to determine the Biketown service area.

The station siting within the service area follows a detailed criteria that includes elements such as visibility, solar exposure, cellular and GPS reception, proximity to transit and bike routes and proximity to affordable housing.

More than 60 U.S. cities have similar bicycle-sharing programs. Portland's Biketown is a partnership between the Portland Bureau of Transportation and Nike.

Five open house meetings are scheduled for people to ask questions and provide feedback about the program:

  • March 15, 5:30-7:30 pm, Hosford Middle School Cafeteria, 2303 S.E. 28th Place.
  • March 17, Noon-2 p.m., City Hall, Lovejoy Room, 1221 S.W. 4th Ave.
  • March 30, 5-7 p.m., Portland Building, 2nd Floor Room C, 1120 S.W. 5th Ave.
  • April 5, 6-8 p.m., Metropolitan Learning Center, 233 N.W. Glisan St.
  • April 7, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Immaculate Heart Church, 2926 N. Williams Ave.
