PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An Estacada boy and a 911 dispatcher are being honored for their efforts to try and save the little boy’s father.

Wednesday, 7-year-old Devin Duke and Clackamas County dispatcher Lori Gillingham received 911 Hero medals at the 2016 Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials Western Regional Conference.

Two years ago, Devin found his dad on the couch unresponsive with no color in his face.

Right then, his grandmother happened to call, so Devin answered and told her to call 911.

Gillingham worked with the grandmother to get paramedics there and all involved say Devin did everything right, even using a chair to unlock a high lock to help first responders get into his home.

Sadly, his father passed away, but officials wanted to honor both Devin and Gillingham for staying calm and doing everything they could.

“I said, call 911, and then the firemen said sit outside on the deck for a while and then they arrived,” Devin said, adding that he thought his dad would have been proud of him.

Gillingham advises that parents should continually talk to their kids about 911, so it becomes second nature in an emergency. She also suggests parents make sure children know their address and phone number.
