PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

After months of heated comments from Portland Public School parents about proposed boundary changes, Superintendent Carole Smith responded with her own recommendations Wednesday afternoon.

Smith gave her scenario to the District-wide Boundary Review Advisory Committee for review, asking committee members to discuss the plan and share their “gut” reactions to the plan.

Under Smith’s plan, the district would shift to a kindergarten through fifth grade elementary model, turning some schools into middle schools and changing the feeder schools into them to address overcrowding concerns.

Currently, the district predominantly uses a kindergarten through eighth grade elementary model.

The proposed boundary changes are designed to help overcrowding at some schools while others are less filled, in an attempt to balance enrollment around the district.

There would be exceptions under the plan for some schools, either based on curriculum focus, geography or other reasons. Smith’s plan would gradually roll out, starting in the fall of 2016 and not finishing until at least 2019.

The superintendent’s presentation was just a first draft scenario, and will now get feedback from the advisory committee.

Smith makes a final proposal to the school board either at the end of March or the beginning of April.
