Oregon State Police said a driver has died after a tree fell onto a vehicle along Highway 26 Wednesday night.

Oregon Department of Transportation said a tree fell onto a vehicle on U.S. 26 just after 6 p.m. about five miles east of the intersection with U.S. 101.

OSP confirmed the driver, 37-year-old Nicholas Harris of Portland, had been killed from the impact.

Officials determined that Harris had been driving westbound on the highway when the tree fell on top of his car.

High winds on the coast have caused a number of downed trees on coastal roads.

ODOT said travelers are recommended to use caution Thursday morning. There may be a number of obstacles still on the roads.

Officials closed U.S. 26 for a about 2 hours after the incident. It is now open in both directions about five miles east of U.S. 101.

OSP and Astoria police are still investigating this incident.
