TIGARD, OR (KPTV) -

A man accused of stabbing and killing a woman outside a Burger King restaurant in Tigard more than 17 years ago is now back in the U.S. and behind bars.

Tigard police said they have been working with the U.S. Department of Justice for several years to obtain the extradition of Luis Hernandez-Diaz, 46, from Mexico.

The extradition was recently granted and Hernandez-Diaz arrived in the U.S. on Tuesday.

He was booked into the Washington County Jail on charges of murder and unlawful carrying of a dangerous weapon. He was arraigned in court Wednesday and remained in jail Thursday without bail.

Police said Hernandez-Diaz stabbed and killed Maria Garcia-Leonardo in the parking of a Burger King restaurant on the 11500 block of Southwest Pacific Highway in Tigard on Feb. 12, 1999.

Investigators said Hernandez-Diaz has numerous aliases and may be known to some as Efrain Sanchez Diaz, Luis Hernandez, Luis Diaz, Luis Hernandez-Diaz, Efrain Diaz and Jesus Sanchez Diaz. Police believe Efrain Sanchez Diaz may be his true name.

Detectives said even though it has been many years since the homicide occurred, anyone with information about this case or Hernandez-Diaz is asked to contact the Tigard Police Department at 503-639-6168.
