PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The IAAF World Indoor Championships are officially underway at the Oregon Convention Center, and organizers say the international event is set to have a $24.2 million economic impact on Portland and Oregon.

People from all over the world will soon be at the convention center to check out these major back-to back championship sports events, and shops all around the convention center say they’re looking forward to the uptick in business.

Event organizers claim that gross spending directly attributed to the IAAF events is estimated at $15.9 million.

They add that some 20,300 hotel rooms for both weekends will be booked because of the event, with lodging tax revenues of $487,000.

Local restaurants and coffee shops say they too are preparing for all of that business. Table 6 Bistro, which is about a block away from the convention center, says they’ve upped their food order and are bringing in more staff next week in anticipation of more business, which they say makes all the difference to them.

“We’ve got a great menu planned for next week,” said executive chef and owner Cindy Hymer. “We’re expecting to do 100 lunches a day, and that’s 25 over what we do on a normal day, and if people bring in friends we’ve got enough food for everyone.”

In addition to the financial boost to Portland’s economy, organizers say the event puts Portland on the map for an internationally recognized sports destination venue.
