Portland City Attorney seeks to sue Monsanto over pollution concerns

Posted: Updated:

The City of Portland could be getting ready to sue food company Monsanto over pollution concerns.

Portland City Attorney Tracy Reeve says she wants to file a lawsuit to hold the company responsible for contamination in the Columbia Slough and Willamette River.

Reeve says man-made toxic chemicals called polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been found in the water. The chemicals have been known to harm birds, fish and other animals.

Monsanto is the only company in the United States to manufacture PCBs from the 1930s until they were banned in 1979, according to Reeve.

Reeve claims the company is aware of their environmental dangers. Seattle, Spokane, Berkeley, Oakland, San Diego and San Jose have all filed claims against Monsanto for costs incurred due to PCB contamination.

City Council still has to authorize the lawsuit. They are set to discuss it next week.
