KEIZER, OR (KPTV) -

A Salem boy was killed after being hit by a car while attempting to cross the street with his mother Friday evening, according to Keizer Police.

Officers responded to the report of a vehicle versus pedestrian crash at the 3900 block of North River Road.

Police said Jaren Nash, 8, and his mother, Devon Rutherford, were attempting to cross River Road between Sam Orcutt and Sunset in Keizer at 7:03 p.m. Friday evening, when he was hit by a 2006 Ford Explorer driving northbound.

According to police, the driver of the Explorer was William Wetzler, 31, of Salem.

The boy was taken by Lifeflight to Doernbecher Children's Hospital for treatment. Shortly after Jaren arrived at Doernbecher, he died from his injuries according to police.

Police said Wetzler stopped immediately after the crash, and cooperated fully with the investigation.

Preliminary investigation indicates that it was dark and the roadway was wet at the time of the incident.

Police said additionally, the portion of the roadway Jaren and his mother were trying to cross was not a crosswalk.

The case remains under investigation at this time, according to police.
