Haggen confirms sale of core stores to Albertson's

Posted: Updated:

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) - Bankrupt grocer Haggen has announced it will sell its remaining core stores to Albertson's.

The Bellingham Herald reports the agreement with Albertsons for approximately 30 stores in Washington and Oregon is subject to bankruptcy court approval and document finalization.

The Bellingham-based company also said this week it will close four stores in the two states and layoff more than 250 people.

Haggen filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2015 after purchasing nearly 150 stores from Albertsons so Albertsons could receive regulatory approval to merge with Safeway. Haggen struggled to convert the stores to its brand and many of the stores have been auctioned.
