Salem man accused of kidnapping his grandmother

A Salem man was arrested Sunday accused of kidnapping his grandmother, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

According to deputies, Robert White, 22, is suspected of using metamphetamine heavily, and his family had been struggling to help him.

After White’s grandmother, 87, placed him in a hotel for a couple of days, she had to inform him that the money had run out, and he needed to leave.

Deputies said after leaving the room Saturday evening, White was picked up by his grandmother. He got in the back seat of the car, placed a knife to his grandmother's throat and told her to drive.

According to deputies White and his grandmother drove through the night while he rambled about the police following him for the past nine months.

According to deputies, White called 911 at about 8 a.m. Sunday morning.

Utilizing GPS technology, dispatcher's at the Willamette Valley Communications Center we able to guide deputies to White and his grandmother on State Street just east of Lancaster Drive in Salem.

White was taken into custody and charged with unlawful possession of a meth, kidnapping II, menacing, criminal mischief I, and a violation of a protective order.

Deputies said both White and his grandmother were not harmed during the incident.
