Vancouver Wrestling Club: ‘Teaching Champions in life’

Posted: Updated:

Patience, perseverance, courage, self-esteem, self-control. Those are the characteristics each wrestler strives to achieve at Vancouver’s Askeo International Mat Club.

“Askeo is a Greek word. It means to physically labor for something or to strive for something," said Damon McPherson.

The Askeo International Mat club is chiseling greatness and molding minds.

When Damon McPherson founded the non-profit club nine years ago, he had eight participants.

Now, there are 60 active members, boys and girls, ages 5-18, gathering and grappling at Mountain View High School four days a week.

McPherson bought into what his father, recently retired Donnie McPherson was telling him.

Damon was a three-time state champion in the early 1990’s at Jefferson High School in Portland, earning a scholarship to Oregon State University, but never finished.

"I tell my kids all the time, it's not how you fall, it’s how you get up so it was great redemption for me to go back to school and graduate from seminary school just two months ago," said McPherson.

Preaching and teaching and now his athletes are heading to Reno.

The tall task is now getting 43 kids, plus parents and coaches, to the 19th annual Reno World Championships April 7th though the 10th.

Getting there is their first opponent, caravanning to the Nevada Desert in 15 rented vans.

You can help the Askeo kids and their families to travel to Nevada by donating to their Go Fund Me here.
