PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A woman accused of biting her 11-year-old son during an argument pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal mistreatment and was sentenced to community service.

The investigation began in December 2015 when police responded to reports of a disturbance at an apartment complex on the 200 block Southeast 148th Avenue.

According to court documents, a neighbor reported that Heidi Lynn Boyum, 30, was fighting with her boyfriend when their son tried to intervene. A probable cause affidavit states Boyum then bit the boy.

Her boyfriend told police Boyum was intoxicated at the time, court documents state.

Police said the boy had several small cuts and bruises on his chest, neck and left side of his face near his eye, as well as a bite mark on his arm.

A probable cause affidavit states Boyum told investigators her son was being defiant and it led to a fight that included pushing and shoving. Boyum told police her actions were in self-defense and, "my only defense was to bite him," according to the affidavit.

The boy was taken by another family member to the hospital for treatment.

After pleading guilty Friday, Boyum was sentenced to five days in jail with credit for time served, 20 hours of community service and three years supervised probation, as well as a $200 fine.
