East Portland neighbors rally for peace after violent weekend

Posted: Updated:

Residents of an east Portland neighborhood took a stand Monday afternoon, rallying to demand an end to the recent violence, in the wake of a shooting over the weekend that injured four people.

Laurie Palmer, whose son was a recent victim of gang violence, organized the rally quickly over social media and through dozens of phone calls.

“I’m not going to take my seat,” said Palmer.  “I think it’s important for us to have a voice on it, and for us to get out here when stuff like this happens and say that we care.”

According to police, Saturday night’s shooting at the Rosewood Community Center happened during a birthday party, after a fight broke out between rival gang members.

All four victims are expected to survive their injuries.

Police have not made an arrest in connection with the shooting.
