SILVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

Friends and family of Phillip Rivera are remembering the Salem man who was killed in a three-car crash outside Silverton Friday.

“This has been devastating for everybody,” his wife, Rita Cardona, told Fox 12.  “On Friday at 2:45, 3:00, my life changed.  I lost my best friend, I lost the man I was supposed to spend the rest of my life [with]… it’s just very hard.”

Rivera, 52, was driving home from work Friday, when he was hit and killed. Marion County Deputies say Jessica Macken, 36, of Amity, lost control in a sweeping curve on Nusom Road, hitting two cars head-on.  Rivera was driving one, and his co-worker was driving the other.

Deputies say Macken was driving under the influence of marijuana and had her two kids, ages 10 and 13, in the car.  They were taken to the hospital to be checked out but weren’t seriously hurt.

Another co-worker, Brandon Foreman, was a minute behind Rivera.

“When I came across it, she had just struck him,” Foreman told Fox 12.  “All I could think of was get to his phone, call his wife, because this is bad.”

“[Brandon] even put the phone to his ear so I could tell him I love him and I’m coming, it’s okay, I’m coming, I love you,” Cardona recalled.

“As soon as her voice came through the phone he clinched my hand,” Foreman said.

Rivera passed away a few moments later.

“To me it’s not a death, I’m just trying to celebrate his life and I’m striving to be the man he was,” said Rivera’s son, Alex Cardona, Jr.

Family members say Rivera also went by Alex Cardona.  They describe him as someone who was funny and outgoing, who would go out of his way to help people, and who loved his family more than anything.

Macken is now in the Marion County Jail, facing eight charges: second-degree manslaughter, DUII, three counts of fourth-degree assault and three counts of reckless endangering.  Prior to this, she had no criminal history in Oregon.

“To me, that’s murder.  It’s different.  I feel sympathy for the kids involved because not only did I lose a father, they lost a mother,” Cardona, Jr. said.  “[But] she had to have consequences for her actions as well.”
