TUALATIN, OR (KPTV) -

The Tualatin Police Department now has a new tool to patrol parks and trails throughout the city.

A Segway was donated to the department last week by the Tualatin Community Police Foundation.

The Segway had been owned by CentralCal Properties, a company that manages the Bridgeport Village, Nyberg Rivers and Nyberg Woods shopping centers.

The electric personal transportation vehicle was infrequently used at those locations, so CentralCal management reached out to Tualatin police to see if officers could put it to use.

Police Chief Kent Barker said the Segway will be used to patrol Tualatin's parks and a new trail that was recently completed along the Tualatin River. Barker believes the Segway will also make a great conversation piece for officers to stop and engage people in the community in a non-enforcement manner.

The used Segway has an estimated value of $4,000. Barker said a Segway has always been on the department's wish list, but it wasn't a realistic option until this donation.

"Receiving a donation like this from the Foundation makes our jobs easier and helps get our officers out in areas we normally couldn't get to in a patrol car. So don't be surprised to see Chief Barker out on the trails himself someday in the very near future," according to a Tualatin Police Department release.
