PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Thieves smashed their way into an auto repair shop and drove away with two customer’s cars and tens of thousands worth of tools, and the brazen crime was all caught on camera.

The thieves broke into SM Japanese Engine, an auto repair shop off of Portland Highway in northeast Portland. They didn't realize is that cameras mounted on a businesses across the street caught the whole thing.

Just after midnight last Tuesday, the surveillance cameras captured two people as they made their way into shop. Employees noted the alarm system was tripped, but when police never showed up thieves took advantage of the opportunity.

According to staff at the shop, thieves managed to get their hands on two sets of customer keys and drove off with their cars.

Workers also claimed the thieves swiped some $60,000 worth of tools the owner kept in the shop.

The owners of the shop said they are grateful that the car owners have been understanding about their stolen vehicles.

However, because their expensive tools were stolen, the business could not do any work last week, and they aren't sure how to move forward.

Employees also said the shop's owner went into shock over the theft.

Investigators with the Portland Police Bureau confirm they are investigating the theft, and ask that anyone with information on the theft to call police.
