PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Demonstrators gathered in front of the federal courthouse in downtown Portland Wednesday to support a man who spent three months inside the sanctuary of a Portland church to avoid deportation.

Francisco Aguirre is originally from El Salvador. He was originally deported in 2000 after a drug conviction in Portland, but came back to the area illegally.

Aquirre was arrested by immigration agents in 2014 after showing up for a DUII hearing. He was released under the condition that he would go back home to El Salvador.

Instead, Aguirre hid in the Augustana Lutheran Church.

Now, those supporting him say they want the Justice Department to drop the reentry charge against him.

On Wednesday, Aguirre's wife spoke to the demonstrators.

"I'm here today to ask that you stop the persecution of my husband. It's been nearly two year that this has been going on."

Aguirre's trial is set to begin in April.
