City of Portland unanimously approves lawsuit against Monsanto

Posted: Updated:

The City of Portland is moving forward with a lawsuit against Monsanto over pollution concerns.

On Wednesday, the City Council unanimously authorized the lawsuit.

City Attorney Tracy Reeve said she wants to hold Monsanto responsible for contamination in the Columbia Slough and Willamette River.

Reeve said Monsanto is the only company in the United States to make toxic chemicals known as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) since the 1930's. She also claims those chemicals have been found in Portland's waters despite the company knowing their environmental dangers.

Seattle, Spokane, Berkeley, Oakland, San Diego and San Jose have all filed claims against Monsanto for costs incurred due to PCB contamination.
