PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Vernonia man who helped save three children from a flood was honored for his heroism.

On Wednesday, Steve Roberts was one of the winners of this year's Royal Rosarian Newsmakers Awards, and FOX 12's own Nora Hart presented it to him.

Extensive flooding hit Vernonia in December and after seeing a neighbor's post online, Roberts got in his truck to go help. He carried the woman across her flooded driveway, to dry ground after he carried her three young children to safety.

Roberts said he was just being neighborly.

"We do what we gotta do out there in Vernonia. As far as helping out our neighbors and when somebody's in need, you basically help out."

Roberts said at some points during the rescue the water was up to his chin.
