Portland Housing Bureau proposes plan to bus homeless to other cities

Posted: Updated:

The Portland Housing Bureau has developed a plan to help the homeless in the city.

The plan involves busing homeless people out of Portland to other cities so they may find better opportunities.

The bureau said it is not just about kicking people out, but instead getting them to a safe place where they might be able to find a job.

The proposal is similar to the Homeward Bound Program in San Francisco.

Those homeless people who wish to leave must satisfy a couple of requirements first, according to the housing bureau.

First the person must prove they have a place to stay in the new city. They also must prove that they tried to find work in the Portland area.

Passengers must prove they can remain sober throughout the journey and are medically stable to get to their destination without any help.

The housing bureau said this $30,000 plan is a small part of the $2.75 million plan requested to help fight homelessness in Portland.
