SEASIDE, OR (KPTV) -

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued three people after their kayaks capsized on the Necanicum River near Seaside.

A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter responded to the scene Wednesday.

Investigators said the three males – ages 17, 18 and 20 – were kayaking in the Necanicum River when they capsized in a remote area and were stranded on a gravel bar in the middle of the river.

The helicopter crew quickly located the trio huddled together at around 8:40 p.m. A rescue swimmer was lowered 190 feet to evaluate and assist the stranded kayakers.

All three were hoisted up to the helicopter and eventually taken to the hospital with symptoms related to hypothermia.

"The Coast Guard reminds persons on the water to be prepared for an unexpected emergency by wearing proper gear like a wetsuit and life jacket," said Lt. Chris Morris, command duty officer, Sector Columbia River. "We remind everyone that the rivers and creeks are running fast due to the amount of rain that has hit the area, so caution is essential."
