The Gang Enforcement Team is searching for suspects after a shooting in north Portland that left one man in the hospital.

Officers responded to the area of North Mississippi and Jessup Street at 4:28 p.m. Thursday - on the edge of the Cascade Campus of Portland Community College.

"Being in the middle of the day, PCC - the school itself - is heavily patrolled, so it's kind of shocking that they would do it in the middle of the day in such a public area," said Ryan Hart, who lives near the intersection.

Officers arrived to find a man in his early 20s suffering from a gunshot wound. Police said he was conscious and alert at the scene, but his condition was not immediately known.  Officers later said the man was in stable condition.

A neighbor who asked to remain anonymous said the shooting started with a fight in which a group of young men confronted another man, but when he turned to leave one of them pulled a gun and shot him.

Police said preliminary information was that the shooter may have left the area in a vehicle. He is described as a black man in his early 20s, standing 5'8" with a thin build.

"Bullets don't have names on them in terms of where they're going, they can strike wherever, so it concerns me," Hart added. "It's an area that's highly populated by children and students - I mean, right here on the curb there's a hopscotch in chalk that was drawn last night. So it's very close to innocent individuals who shouldn't even be susceptible to seeing that at this age."

North Mississippi Avenue was closed to all traffic, from Killingsworth Street to Simpson Street. North Jessup Street was closed from Michigan Avenue to Mississippi Avenue.  All of the affected streets were reopened by 7:00 p.m.

The Gang Enforcement Team responded to assist and take over the crime scene.

Anyone with information on this shooting or other gun crimes in the city is asked to contact the Portland Police Bureau's Tactical Operations Division at 503-823-4106 or email information to gangs@portlandoregon.gov.
