ASTORIA, OR (KPTV) -

You’ve probably seen those inflatable "air dancers" around malls or car lots, trying to attract customers. But now they’re being used to scare off some unwanted sea lions on the Oregon coast.

Several people gathered at the Port of Astoria on Thursday morning to watch the air dancers get inflated for the first time.

Port workers placed a few of them around the docks where hundreds of sea lions huddle together daily. Not only do the sea lions block access to the docks, but fishermen get very frustrated with the amount of salmon they consume.

Right away, a few of the sea lions were scared off by the colorful and floppy fixtures, but many of the animals didn't seem phased in other areas without the air dancers.

Some people are skeptical of this plan, but they’re taking a wait-and-see attitude.

“Time will tell,” said Rob Evert with the Port of Astoria. “One thing about the sea lions is they’re very intelligent animals. So if they realize these are not a harm or threat to them, it’s possible they’ll get back on the docks.”

Last year, local officials implemented a different strategy to remove the sea lions. They launched a fake orca whale, driven by someone in the water. But the plan failed when the orca capsized, leaving the sea lions with another victory.

Students from a local high school also tested out metal railings along the docks to see if they might deter the sea lions.
