SHERWOOD, OR (KPTV) -

There have been multiple reports of coyote sightings throughout Sherwood over the past several weeks.

The Portland Audubon Society said the sightings of urban coyotes have caused concern and generated numerous questions from the public.

Experts say to never deliberately feed a coyote or other wild animal and be sure to securely cover garbage cans and compost bins.

People should never approach a coyote, and children should be taught to respect all wildlife from a distance.

Pets should be kept indoors from dusk to dawn when coyotes are most active.

If you don't want coyotes around your home, the Audubon Society says you have to let them know they are not welcome by shouting, making loud noises and waving your arms.

The Portland Audubon Society has a website with much more information on urban coyotes.

Anyone who sees a coyote in the metro area is asked to report the sighting to the Portland Urban Coyote Project, which is a joint program between the Audubon Society of Portland and Portland State University.

For other concerns about urban wildlife, contact the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
