PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

It’s an annual ritual that seems to get even more crowded and chaotic every year. As families try to get out of town to find a little relaxation over Spring Break, they’re running into some long lines first.

It’s shaping up to be the busiest Spring Break ever on record at the Portland International Airport, where 645,000 travelers are expected to come through the gates between March 16 and 29. That breaks down to roughly 4,000 extra people every day.

Matthew McFarland and his family were waiting in the security line at PDX Friday evening, after driving from Bend to Portland to catch a flight out to The Bahamas for Spring Break.

“The drive is always fine until you hit 205 and then it takes 45 minutes to drive the last 10 miles,” McFarland explained.

As for the line at PDX?

“This is a little longer than I figured for this time of night, but it’s okay,” he said. "Everyone wants to travel for Spring Break, what could be better?”

Traffic heading out of Portland Friday afternoon was marred with brake lights and gridlock.

“It’s probably been 2 hours of a delay – just bumper-to-bumper traffic,” driver Kirk Wall said as he stopped for gas off NE Marine Drive, after losing half a tank idling. “Everybody warned me to get out of town by 1:00 in the afternoon and I didn’t understand why, I had late appointments, and I didn’t realize Spring Break was going on. I thought it would just be your routine, crazy Friday traffic. But this is really bad.”

Still, both McFarland and Wall had good attitudes about it all.

Airport officials say make sure you arrive at least an hour and a half before your flight – or better yet two hours during peak travel hours in the morning and around lunchtime. Also, remember to allow time to find parking.
