PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Some students at Portland State University have become the target of a cyber-attack.

The university says on Friday several students got an email asking them to download an invoice attachment.

The attachment could install something called ransomware on their computers that can encrypt files and then demand a payment to unlock the files.

The Ransomware could also destroy the student’s data and potentially data of the university.

It is not known how many students have been affected by the attack.

Administrators say if you got the email to report it to the university and then delete the email.

If you downloaded the file you should contact the Portland State University Office of Information Technology right away.
