GOVERNMENT CAMP, OR (KPTV) -

A ski resort on Mt. Hood is honoring the memory of a former Olympic gold medalist.

A memorial service was held Saturday at Mt. Hood Skibowl for Bill Johnson.

Johnson died in January following complications from a stroke.

Skibowl is where Johnson learned to race.

At the memorial service, a ceremony was held to give his gold medal to his mother.

Johnson was the first American skier to win a gold medal in downhill racing in 1984.

A ski run at Skibowl has also been dedicated in Johnson’s honor.
