GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

Officials announced Tuesday that the owners of the Gresham bakery Sweet Cakes by Melissa has filed a suit with the Oregon Court of Appeals.

First Liberty and Boyden Gray filed the brief on behalf of Aaron and Melissa Klein, a couple who claims they lost their bakery business for acting on their religious beliefs.

The Kleins said their constitutional rights to religious freedom, free speech and due process were violated.

The owners were criticized after they refused to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex Portland couple in 2013, resulting in a $135,000 fine from the Bureau of Labor and Industries.

A 2007 Oregon law protects the rights of gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender people in employment, housing and public accommodations. The state ruled it also bars private businesses from discriminating against potential customers.
