PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Firefighters from Portland’s Fire Station 17 spent an unusual Tuesday morning rescuing eight orphaned ducklings from a storm drain.

A 9-1-1 caller on Marine Drive reported seeing the ducklings’ mother get hit by a car, and the ducklings tumbling into the drain.

Firefighters had to close a lane of traffic on Marine Drive to attempt the rescue.

“We were able to scoop the first couple up in the net, put them in the box, and then we just kept the box in the storm drain and as they started coming out we would just lay on the ground and reach in and grab them,” said Captain T.J. Lehnertz.

Lehnertz said all the ducklings were in good shape, and were surrendered to the Audubon Society.

The rescue is at least the second duck-related rescue in the past week in the Portland area. A family of ducklings were rescued in Southeast Portland on April 24.

On April 18, eleven ducklings were rescued in Hillsboro.

Salem Police also helped escort a family of ducks to a creek on April 20.
