FOX 12 and Les Schwab Tire Centers are proud to announce April’s “Be the Change” recipient Sandy Getman.

Getman is the founder of the Wheel to Walk Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps children with disabilities obtain medical equipment or services not provided by insurance.

She and her family started the organization 25 years ago after her granddaughter was born with spinal muscular atrophy.

“I cried for two years and that didn’t help anything, so we decided to form a foundation,” said Getman.

Wheel to Walk gives children access to equipment like therapy tricycles, wheelchairs, adaptive strollers, crutches, gate trainers, car seats, bath chairs, and communication devices.

The foundation has helped more than 1,200 families in the area.

Through Wheel to Walk, kids who struggle with mobility can do activities they never thought possible, like playing outside or going on road trips.

Getman and her family said they wanted help families get equipment that is not so easy to obtain. They partner with local hospitals to help families get what they need.

“Children with special needs sometimes don’t get the equipment that they need, so we thought that was going to be our focus,” she said.

Getman said it is completely worth it.

“They thank us so much and thank us for the opportunity,” she said. “With a bicycle to all go out as a family, or a car seat to all go on a trip with a stroller.”

The Wheel to Walk Foundation is always looking for additional funds to help local families. Learn more about them and their upcoming fundraiser at
