PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A passenger in a stolen car that slammed into two vehicles in southeast Portland died at the hospital, according to police.

An officer spotted a speeding car on Southeast Holgate Boulevard near 94th Avenue at 2:39 a.m. Friday. The officer turned around and began to follow the vehicle, but the driver sped away when the officer activated the police lights.

Investigators said the 1994 Honda Accord ran a red light at Southeast 92nd Avenue and collided with two other vehicles.

The driver of the Honda, 28-year-old Christopher Allen Schmidt, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. He remained in the hospital Wednesday.

A rear passenger identified as 49-year-old Theodore Swan suffered critical injuries and died at the hospital Monday, according to police.

The front passenger, 25-year-old Amanda Atkinson, was treated and released from the hospital.

Investigators said the Honda was stolen.

The first vehicle it hit was a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser heading southbound on 92nd Avenue. The driver and passenger in the SUV were not seriously injured.

The second vehicle hit by the stolen car was a 1993 Honda Civic. That car was stopped at a red light facing eastbound on Holgate Boulevard at the time of the crash. The 28-year-old driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Two passengers in that car were not seriously injured.

No arrests have been made or citations issued at this time as the incident remains under investigation.

However, police said Schmidt is expected to face charges after the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office presents the case to a grand jury.
