SHERWOOD, OR (KPTV) -

Many people in Sherwood are stunned and saddened after three young people from the community were in a severe car crash, killing one of them.

At 1 a.m. Wednesday, Beaverton police said 50-year-old Armando Gallegos was drunk and driving the wrong way on Highway 26 near Murray Boulevard, going west in the eastbound lanes.

He crashed into a Honda Civic driven by 20-year-old Taylor Melger.

Melger and passenger 17-year-old McKenna Hoffstadt survived with severe injuries. But another passenger, 21- year-old Brandon Wendell, died at the scene.

The two men graduated from Sherwood High School in 2014 and students there said everyone is talking about it.

“Just shocked. It’s crazy,” said senior Maddie Bouska. “You don’t think it will ever happen and when it does, it’s just hard to believe.”

Wendell’s family shared a photo of him with FOX 12, posing with his little brother. Wendell was convicted of assault last year, but his family said he was getting his life back on track and he was a very happy young man.

Students said Hoffstadt was known to be a spirited and unique girl. Hoffstadt’s mother confirmed with FOX 12 that she is in the hospital with severe injuries.

Police say both Melger and Gallegos had a blood alcohol content above the legal limit. They remained in the hospital Tuesday.
