New PPS program encourages hands-on learning for kids

Posted: Updated:

A new program from Portland Public Schools is encouraging seventh graders to get real hands-on learning and have fun.

Seventh grade students from West Sylvan Middle School spent all Wednesday making arcade games from scratch including a claw machine, ski-ball and basketball.

It's part of Portland Public School's new program called 7th-Grade Maker Experiences program. It gives the kids hands-on learning, as well as encourage critical and design-thinking skills.

Teachers at West Sylvan Middle School said the students are loving it.

"I think this is a great time because 7th graders are really open to doing many different things. It might be good at an earlier age as well, I don't know, but I do know that they are liking it a lot," said 7th grade teacher Karen Rouse.

The program is 3 days long.

West Sylvan Middle School said they have sessions planned throughout the entire year.
