Eleven Red Cross volunteers from Oregon helping out with flood cleanup in Texas

Houston, TX (KPTV) -

Severe weather has been tearing through the central and southern United States. The storms have been deadly in Texas where cleanup efforts are now underway, and that's where 11 people from Oregon are now volunteering with the Red Cross.

Theresa Grimes lives in Bend but is down in the Houston, Texas area right now. She's one of eleven Red Cross volunteers from Oregon helping with the recovery efforts there.

The group headed down last week after deadly flooding hit the Houston area.

Grimes told FOX 12 while they were in the middle of helping people get back on their feet after the initial flooding, they've been hit by more bad weather.

"We had some severe thunderstorms this morning and heavy rains, so we had some issues with trees falling down and people asking for more assistance."

Trees have been falling across the region and one woman was killed when a tree fell onto a home outside Houston Tuesday night.

Grimes said she and her team have been going around neighborhoods asking people how they can help, whether it's providing food, clothing and other supplies.

Grimes said they have found people in dire situations.

"All their belongings are out in the street. You walk in and the house is totally torn apart. We're trying to get that wet debris, the dry wall, everything out before the mold starts."

The storms have been so bad, that Grimes has signed on to help out in Houston for an additional week, so she now plans on being there until mid-May.

While her task is tough, Grimes said she's happy to help.

"It's all hard work, but I'm enjoying being out here helping people. They're very appreciative when they find out I've come from Oregon. They say 'oh my gosh, you came all that way'."
