CLACKAMAS COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

A man who stole a safe from a preschool was caught trying to crack it in plain sight near the Clackamas County Justice Court, according to deputies.

Employees at the justice court, located on the east side of the Clackamas Town Center mall property, saw what they believed was someone trying to break into a safe near the bike path that runs parallel to I-205 at around noon Thursday.

The employees reported it to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputy assigned to provide security at justice court.

Other patrol deputies responded to the scene and found the suspect, identified as 55-year-old Darryl Aaron Tasco, trying to break into a safe near the bike path, according to the sheriff's office.

At around the same time, an Oregon City officer was investigating a burglary at the Oregon City Preschool on the 700 block of 6th Street in Oregon City.

The Oregon City officer heard the call over the radio about the suspect and the safe near the Clackamas County Justice Court and realized the safe in that case sounded like one that was reported stolen overnight from the preschool.

Further investigation revealed that it was the same safe. A checkbook from the preschool was among the items recovered from the safe.

Tasco, who is from Delaware, was booked into the Clackamas County Jail on charges of second-degree burglary and second-degree theft. He is also being detained on a fugitive warrant.
